ADL Joins International Conference in Rome Marking 50th Anniversary of Nostra Aetate

New York, NY, October 30, 2015 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) joined with representatives of faiths from around the world at an international conference in Rome celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Vatican’s landmark document, Nostra Aetate.

Rabbi David Fox Sandmel, ADL Director of Interfaith Affairs, attended the conference as a representative of the International Jewish Committee on Interreligious Consultations (IJCIC), where he was among a group of leaders who greeted Pope Francis in St. Peters Square.

“It was particularly moving to hear the Pope reaffirm the church’s commitment to Nostra Aetate and Jewish-Christian relations and unequivocally condemn anti-Semitism before an audience of thousands from all over the world in St. Peters Square,” said Rabbi Sandmel.  “At our conference, Cardinal Koch and others have stressed the unique relationship of the Church to Judaism and the Jewish people even as they affirmed the importance of relations with other traditions as well. The opportunity to meet leaders from so many traditions has been particularly enriching.”

The conference, sponsored by the Pontifical University Gregoriana, the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and the Pontifical Commission for Relations with the Jews, has brought together Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, Confucians and others

Also representing ADL was Martin L. Budd, co-chair of ADL’s Interfaith Committee and Chair of IJCIC.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
